Building a Custom Subwoofer Enclosure - What to Know

Custom subwoofer enclosures are for when you want to put some subwoofers into your car but don't want to run stock boxes. By a stock box, I mean one that either comes with your subwoofer or simply one where you can only fit one 12" sub.

If you buy two 12" subs, or perhaps two 10" subs for instance, you'll likely either have to build your own box or get someone to build you one. It's important to remember every subwoofer has an "optimal" subwoofer box size in order to maximize clarity and sound performance. You can check the manufacturer's website of your subwoofer to see what this optimal size is.

You can also skip building the whole optimal performance box in exchange for simply something that will fit into your trunk, but it won't sound as good as if you built one to the specs on the manufacturer's website.

Another thing to keep in mind when building your box is to keep all edges perfectly straight. Try to use vice grips to hold the pieces in place before and after gluing, and be sure to place scrues evenly across the construction.

Use a router to machine tho the back to run the subwoofers out the back.

Even if you haven't done the greatest job on your subwoofer box, the MDF wood required to build isn't that expensive. You can always try another one, or use the one you just created. The first few boxes we created here at EuroEnclosures weren't that great either, but you can always tune your deck for less bass output if your box rattles a bit on higher DB output levels.

However, should you want to build the "optimal" box for your subwoofers, be sure to check the manufacturer website of your subwoofers before building.

2008 Scion xB L7 Custom Sub & Amp Box

Here is what I currently have in the back of my 2008 Scion xB. One 15" Kicker L7 in a tuned and ported box. I built and carpeted this. Under the box is a plexiglas window displaying my 1000w Rockford amp. At night it lights up with two 6" white neons. Took a few hours. I have the Scion logo embossed in the face of the box and EC embossed in the window cover. EC stands for Elite Creations Car Club.

Designed these enclosers off of a pair of JBL LF horns I have. For anyone that knows the JBL horn sound, such as the classic JBL Paragon, horns bring their own sound to the party and sounds beautiful!! When finished the stereo will consist of 12 X 18 inch Subwoofers, 12 X 12 inch Subwoofers @ 36000watts could end up being more, Ive played around with the idea of 16 X16 @ 46000 watts.

Custom Subwoofer Enclosures

The home theater systems just isn't a home theater systems without the subwoofer and everybody are supposed to know that, the subwoofer brings a lot to the table when it comes to home theater systems and the home entertainment for your home.

When it comes to watching a movie in a theater or in your home the people don't just want to see the pictures flash by but they also want to hear it properly especially the low deep sound of an explosion or something else, which is provided by the subwoofer.

A subwoofer is designed to deliver a low frequency; it begins with an amplifier that sends electrical pulses to the subwoofer. The signal is AC (alternating current) which means exactly what it sounds like, The current will rotate directions. When the current is going one way the sub will be attracted to the magnet. When the current is going the other way it will be pushed away from the magnet. The rate that the sub moves back and forth produces the frequency the sub plays.

For the placement of the subwoofer it may be moved around you entertainment room from place to place for it does not really matter where you put it, there is no right or wrong for this scenario it all depends on what you like and how you like it.

The subwoofer delivers the low frequencies also know as bass, the subwoofer is dependable for delivering the deep base sound of a movie, a song or live shows.

The subwoofer for a home theater system is not that powerful than those in a movie theater but it have more than enough power to let your neighbors know that you are home and alive, for it will drive them crazy if you turn the volume too hard. Subwoofers consist of two types; a powered subwoofer which is self contained and then you get a passive subwoofer which needs a external receiver/amplifier for it to function to the fullest. There is one problem with the passive subwoofer, the amplifier or receiver cannot deliver enough power to the subwoofer for it to produce the lowest frequencies.

As for the home theater system with a built in powered subwoofer, they can handle the low frequencies because it is designed with a perfect amplifier or receiver for that specific subwoofer, therefore the coils will not burn that easily and your home theater system will last longer.

Here is a important quality that a top of the range home theater subwoofer should have, a crossover of plus minus 100 Hz (hertz) which can channel all the frequencies below 100 Hz of the subwoofer. If you are looking to buy a home theater subwoofer make sure the subwoofer can deliver low frequencies by testing it with DVD's, movies and musical CD's. Make sure it is a good brand name, that the sound is at a high quality and make sure you get a guarantee to return it if it gets faulty.
